Gangnam, Seoul: Guide to Shopping, Nightlife & Top Sights

There is an elephant in the room. Well, not an elephant so much as a portly gentleman in a sharp suit and sunglasses, dancing as if he’s riding an imaginary horse.

Gangnam is not Seoul’s largest district—it ranks third in size. It is not the most populated (about half a million residents, placing it fourth), nor the most scenic; unlike some neighborhoods perched on panoramic hillsides, Gangnam lies on the flat south bank of the Han River. It also contains relatively few historic sites compared with other parts of the city, which boast ancient palaces and temples.

What Gangnam does have is Psy, South Korea’s first global pop sensation, who made the neighborhood famous with “Gangnam Style”—a playful, stylish take on the affluent lifestyle that characterizes this part of the capital.

The district’s most prominent artery is Teheran-ro (Tehran Boulevard), a corridor of gleaming towers that house many of Korea’s leading corporations and international firms. Teheran-ro is not just Gangnam’s economic spine—it’s one of the engines of South Korea’s economy, reflected in sky-high property values. Some estimates suggest Gangnam’s real estate is worth more than the total property value of Busan, the country’s second-largest city.

At the western end of Teheran-ro lies Samsung Town, a cluster of mirror-glass buildings that serves as the global headquarters of the Samsung conglomerate. Nearby, Samsung d’light—a three-floor showroom accessible from Gangnam Station—gives visitors a hands-on look at Samsung Electronics’ newest devices and innovations, alongside a retail area where the latest gadgets are on display.

If Samsung d’light showcases the future of consumer electronics, the riverside neighborhood of Apgujeong-dong offers a glimpse into the future of fashion. Rodeo Street in Apgujeong-dong is often compared to Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive: a place where trends are born, luxury boutiques line the sidewalks, and the most cutting-edge styles in Korea and beyond are on show.

By day, Gangnam projects a sleek, corporate image. After dark it becomes a blaze of neon: restaurants and upscale nightclubs draw Seoul’s affluent and fashion-conscious crowds. The nightlife is glamorous and energetic, though you won’t necessarily find everyone reenacting the “Gangnam Style” dance in clubs—this district’s nightlife tends toward polished sophistication rather than tourist spectacle.

Gangnam’s defining feature is its constant reinvention. Technology, music, and fashion evolve rapidly here; by the time international audiences adopt trends that emerge from Gangnam, the neighborhood has often already moved on to the next innovation. That drive for the new keeps Gangnam perpetually at the cutting edge of Seoul’s cultural and economic life.
