On the Ground: When I arrived at Abu Dhabi International Airport, a friendly baggage attendant met me, placed my luggage on a cart and escorted me into the terminal to the check-in desk. There was no queue, and I completed check-in within five minutes. Security was likewise quick, leaving me time to visit the first- and business-class lounge. The lounge is spacious and thoughtfully laid out, with quieter private areas suited for business travelers who need to work. I sampled the food and beverages and enjoyed a quick breakfast and a latte at the lounge’s coffee bar. Before heading to the gate, I used the U.S. preclearance facility for customs and immigration. After a brief five-minute wait, a customs officer processed me efficiently — the preclearance experience was smooth and reassuring.
Pre-Flight: Boarding was welcoming: a flight attendant greeted me and pointed me to my seat in the business-class cabin. Shortly after I sat down, an attendant circulated with a tray of drink options and warm towels. Once settled, I was offered a selection of newspapers and magazines. I chose a couple of titles, made myself comfortable and prepared for departure.
In-Flight: My seat was in the forward row of business class in one of the two middle seats, with convenient direct aisle access and proximity to the restroom. A removable divider provided privacy when desired or could be lowered for companion travel. The seat converted to a fully flat bed that felt comfortable and spacious. Entertainment ran on a 15.4-inch touch-screen monitor and included a broad mix of new and classic films, TV series and a substantial music library. I used the airline’s noise-canceling headset for most of the flight and found it effective while watching two movies and later exploring the music selection.
The amenity kit included useful travel items such as lip balm, hand lotion and an eye shade; the kit’s stylish pouch was handy enough that I kept it for reuse. Dining on Etihad is flexible, allowing passengers to order whenever they wish. I began with a warming white bean soup from the à la carte selection, followed by a baked chicken entrée with vegetables and lemon rice, which was satisfying. Later, I ordered a cheese selection from the Kitchen Anytime menu and paired it with a glass of Bordeaux from the wine list. When I requested mixed nuts that were not on the printed menu, the flight attendant brought a small dish promptly, which I appreciated.
The Experience: Overall, my business-class journey with Etihad was very positive. The cabin crew was numerous, attentive and personable, creating a welcoming environment. The mood lighting contributed to a calm, relaxed ambiance throughout the flight. Because I cleared U.S. customs and immigration in Abu Dhabi, arrival at JFK was straightforward: I walked directly to baggage claim without further checks. The entire trip felt efficient and comfortable, and I would choose Etihad again.
