Flight Attendants Applaud United’s Updated Carry-On Policy

United Airlines’ new Basic Economy fare, which lowers the ticket price but restricts carry-on luggage, is drawing criticism from some passengers.

However, flight attendants and their union have expressed support. The Association of Flight Attendants says the policy could improve cabin safety for crew and travelers.

“United’s decision to encourage fewer carry-on bags, similar to practices at Frontier and Spirit, will create a safer cabin for passengers and crew. Excess bags in the cabin lead to flight attendant injuries, slower boarding times and passenger altercations,” said Sara Nelson, international president of the AFA, in a statement. She added that flight attendants frequently handle safety and security concerns while working against tight schedules and preparing the cabin for safe departures. Nelson also noted that footage from recent aircraft evacuations shows passengers reaching for carry-on luggage can put everyone at risk.

United plans to introduce the Basic Economy fares in 2017. These lower-priced tickets require passengers to check carry-on bags along with any other checked luggage. Travelers buying Basic Economy may bring only one personal item onboard, and it must fit under the seat in front of them.
