First Nations Winter Feast: Traditions, Recipes & Community Events

The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler, British Columbia, is hosting the First Nations Winter Feast & Performance series through April 18. Events are held on Thursdays and Sundays and combine culturally rich dinners with storytelling, music and dance that highlight the significance of ceremony and tradition. Menus showcase Indigenous-inspired dishes alongside wines from Indigenous World Winery and craft beers from local breweries. Reservations are recommended to secure seating.

For a gentle outdoor experience, consider the Teepee Snowshoe Tour offered by Blackcomb Snowmobile. After a guided snowshoe trek in Whistler’s Callaghan Valley, guests relax in a cozy backcountry teepee. The Apres Teepee Tour features a night hike through forested terrain followed by an indoor fire, hot mulled beverages and charcuterie. The Daytime Teepee Tour includes hot drinks and snacks plus insight into local First Nations traditions from your guide. Both tours last about 2.5 hours round-trip and are well suited for beginners and families.

If you prefer a higher-adrenaline option, try the new heli-assisted ski touring experience from Extremely Canadian. This hybrid of ski touring and heli-skiing delivers a full day of backcountry skiing, snowboarding or telemarking with a professional guide in the Coast Mountains. Helicopter transport to and from remote drop-off points is included, with potential locations such as Mt. Currie, Cayoosh, Birkenhead and Snowspider. Lunch, touring services and avalanche safety equipment are available for an additional fee.
