Finisterra Spa at Martinhal Beach Family Resort Hotel Guide

PORTUGAL’S ALGARVE COAST enjoys roughly 300 sunny days a year. After six of them, my skin showed every single one. Whether it was sun-dehydration or the layers of SPF-30 I applied daily, my skin needed serious repair. It was time for Martinhal’s Finisterra Spa.

I had arrived at the 5-star resort with my husband, Tim, and our 16-year-old daughter, Mary, after a few days in the central Algarve where resorts and beaches crowd together. The western Algarve felt more relaxed: sleepy towns, uncrowded beaches and a quieter pace that suited us.

Martinhal sits within a protected natural park. Soon after we arrived we followed a cliff-top trail along the wild Atlantic coastline of Cape Saint Vincent, dropping from dizzying headlands to long golden beaches where surfers tackled some of Europe’s best waves. We were spectators for most of it, though Mary signed up for a surfing lesson at the resort’s Water Sports Center and came away inspired despite a few face-plants.

While Mary tried to master the waves, Tim and I kayaked with a guide to explore sea caves and the clear waters around rocky outcrops visible from our room’s balcony. Paddling reminded Tim of his tight shoulders from carrying camera gear, which made the idea of a soothing massage very appealing. He was happy to join Mary and me for spa treatments.

Finisterra Spa occupies its own building set within natural landscaping apart from the hotel, villas and recreation areas, reinforcing a sense of peaceful seclusion. The name Finisterra literally means “end of the Earth,” a fitting reference to Martinhal’s position near Europe’s southwestern tip.

This windswept headland was once where Prince Henry the Navigator gathered mapmakers, geographers and navigators during the Golden Age of Discoveries to plan voyages that established Portugal as a major 15th-century seafaring power. The wealth those explorations brought back still decorates Baroque churches in nearby towns. Although Martinhal makes a fine base for exploring the western Algarve, on this visit we were focused on the spa — the gold-gilded churches and Prince Henry’s historic outpost would wait.

True to its family-resort reputation, Martinhal’s spa offers treatments for all ages: mother-and-child facials, father-and-child back massages, mother-and-child manicures, and a full Tweens & Teens menu. Teen treatments include facials with masks and moisturizers and introductions to basic skincare routines. Mary, comfortable in spa settings, happily followed a smiling therapist to her teen facial while Tim and I lingered in the hot tub that looks out over the natural landscape before heading in ourselves.

The spa menu is extensive. Massages range from detox treatments with herbal compresses to anti-stress deep-tissue back work, full-body massages, reflexology, Ayurveda and head treatments. Tim chose a seaweed leaf and hot stones session designed to relax tense, aching muscles.

Body treatments at the spa use VOYA products, formulated with organic seaweed rich in iodine, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. I was tempted by the Detox Mud Wrap, an 80-minute seaweed wrap intended to renew damaged cells, but instead chose the Sweet Ocean treatment, Finisterra’s signature body scrub. It blends local sweet orange and almond bark in sweet almond oil—a nod to the region’s Moorish legacy, when almond trees were widely planted and, in February, the hillsides turn white with blossoms known as “Algarve snow.” The Sweet Ocean scrub, followed by hot towels and organic lavender, left my skin brightened and wrapped me in calming fragrances.

Because my face had taken the brunt of the sun, I added an Ocean Fresh Facial, a mask formulated for sun-exposed skin, plus a Seaweed Marine eye treatment using Atlantic seaweed, green tea and vitamin C to refresh, firm and hydrate tired eyes.

When I finally emerged, Mary and Tim were already gone. I stretched out with a cool drink in the relaxation area, appreciating how the resort’s design uses local materials—native woods, stone, cork and natural fibers—throughout. Natural light fills interior spaces; treatment rooms include skylights, and the relaxation room’s glass wall opens onto a garden planted with indigenous grasses and species in a Zen-like layout. Martinhal’s landscaping and architecture reflect this local ethic: low, whitewashed buildings that follow the hillside and echo traditional Algarve houses.

Watching the peaceful, sunlit landscape, it was easy to imagine being at the end of the Earth.
