The Houston Airport System has received an FAA launch site license, positioning Ellington Airport to expand its role in commercial aerospace operations. This designation allows the airport to support activities such as small satellite launches, astronaut training, microgravity research and spacecraft manufacturing.
“Houston will play a lead role in commercial space operations in the 21st century,” said Houston Mayor Annise Parker. “We believe a licensed spaceport in Houston will not only serve as an economic generator for the city but also enhance Houston’s well-deserved reputation as a leader and key player in the aerospace industry.”
With the FAA license in hand, the airport system can move forward in developing the infrastructure and support services needed for reusable launch vehicles (RLVs). These vehicles typically perform horizontal takeoffs and landings similar to conventional aircraft, so planning focuses on runways, hangars and ground support tailored to that operational profile.
Ellington Airport sits on more than 400 acres near the Gulf of Mexico, offering space for facilities, vehicle assembly, testing areas and related support development. That location provides access to ample airspace and coastal launch corridors beneficial for a variety of commercial space activities while remaining integrated with Houston’s existing aerospace ecosystem.
Developing a licensed spaceport involves coordinated planning for safety, environmental review, airspace management and community engagement. The FAA license signals regulatory approval to begin these steps in earnest, allowing Houston to attract private-sector partners and investments that can create jobs and advance technology development locally.
As work proceeds to establish operational capabilities, Ellington’s proximity to NASA, universities and industry firms in the region strengthens its potential as a hub for collaborative research, workforce training and commercial services tied to the growing small-satellite and reusable launch markets.
By building the necessary facilities and partnerships, the Houston Airport System aims to expand the city’s presence in the commercial space sector while supporting economic growth and innovation rooted in Houston’s longstanding aerospace expertise.
