Sail into the heart of Pacific Rim National Park aboard the Passing Cloud, a 70-foot classic wooden schooner operated by Canadian-based Outer Shores Expeditions. Between April 12 and May 17, the schooner will run a series of eight separate sailings around the hundreds of islets that form the Broken Group Islands in Barkley Sound, British Columbia. Each voyage explores the region’s coastal wilderness, maritime heritage and abundant wildlife while also offering meaningful introductions to the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples and their living cultures.
Themed departures, including Ancient Civilizations and West Coast Wilderness, combine comfortable sailing with immersive shore-based experiences. Guests receive special access to traditional territories of the Huu‑ay‑aht, Tseshaht, Uchucklesaht, Toquaht and Ucluelet Nations, with opportunities to learn about Indigenous stewardship, history and cultural connections to land and sea.
Led by Captain Russell Markel, founder, owner and marine ecologist of Outer Shores Expeditions, the series emphasizes the interdependence of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Guided activities include sea kayaking, whale watching and wildlife excursions to view black bears and shore-dwelling species. Onshore walks and island visits highlight old-growth temperate rainforests, rocky intertidal zones, kelp forest communities, estuaries and the fjord-like channels threading among the islands.
Each sailing balances active exploration with time to relax on deck, offering photographers, naturalists and curious travelers alike a chance to observe seabirds, marine mammals and coastal flora in a relatively pristine environment. Interpretation by the crew and local guides focuses on natural history, species identification and the ecological processes that shape this unique coastal region.
Small-group voyages aboard the Passing Cloud are designed to minimize environmental impact while maximizing educational value. Participants can expect hands-on learning in a respectful, low-impact manner—landing on remote beaches, paddling tranquil bays and listening to stories that connect contemporary life with centuries of Indigenous knowledge.
Whether your interest is wildlife viewing, cultural exchange, or simply experiencing the rhythm of classic sail, these expeditions provide a thoughtful way to discover Barkley Sound’s Broken Group Islands. The combination of skilled seamanship, ecological expertise and local Indigenous perspectives creates a rich, responsible travel experience along Canada’s wild west coast.
