Airlines worldwide are adjusting their pricing models to reduce overall fares, a move that often involves removing services that were once complimentary as air travel became more accessible and comfortable.
To remain competitive with European low-cost carriers, Aer Lingus has removed blankets and earphones from its list of free onboard amenities. While this change may be minimal for short flights, passengers on long-haul journeys from Europe to destinations such as the United States or South America could miss these items—particularly if they forget to pack personal earphones or a travel blanket. Onboard purchases are available: earphones cost €3 (approximately $3.55) and blankets are €5 (about $6).
This decision reflects Aer Lingus’s effort to align its offerings with low-cost long-haul competitors like Norwegian and WOW air, which have entered transatlantic and other long-distance markets with significantly lower fares than legacy carriers. By trimming complimentary items, Aer Lingus aims to balance service levels with more competitive pricing, giving travelers a choice between lower base fares and paying for select extras as needed.
