Eliot Hotel Boston Marks 100 Years with Centennial Celebration

The Eliot Hotel, known simply as The Eliot, is a cherished landmark in Boston’s Back Bay that celebrates its centennial this year. Since opening in 1925 on Commonwealth Avenue, this Neoclassical boutique hotel has represented refined hospitality. To honor 100 years, The Eliot completed a full renovation of all 95 guestrooms and suites, blending contemporary comforts with its timeless design.

Originally built by the family of Charles Eliot, a local philanthropist and Harvard leader in the early 20th century, the hotel opened as a residential property intended for retired academics due to its proximity to the Harvard Club. Nathan Ullian purchased the property in 1939, and the Ullian family has maintained independent ownership and operation ever since.

Local interior designer Alix Keating of AK Design led the redesign, introducing a contemporary eye while preserving the hotel’s traditional and residential character. The refurbishment updates the property’s look and feel while respecting the sophisticated atmosphere that defines a heritage boutique hotel.

Nearly every fixture in the suites was custom-designed for The Eliot, from tailored upholstery to bespoke wooden case goods. Geometric lighting elements contrast with Georgian-inspired wood furnishings, while rich detailing and piping give sofas, lounge chairs and bedding a modern, layered look.

The suites are offered in two refined color palettes: one in warm creams and ivories and the other in cool blues and greys. Subtle gold accents on lighting and hardware add warmth. Custom artwork, including Boston-inspired intaglios, reinforces the residential ambiance. Each element is carefully chosen to harmonize with original crown molding and other historic architectural features, creating a polished, timeless boutique hotel experience.

“Celebrating a centennial is a tremendous milestone for us,” said Dora Ullian, owner, The Eliot. “We recognize that in today’s world, it is incredibly rare to have a family-owned and operated hotel. While we are proud of our beautiful building, we are most proud of the on-property team who bring each guest experience to life. Additionally, we are honored to be led by a majority female management team, whose dedication and vision have been instrumental in upholding our legacy.”

The hotel’s UNI Restaurant serves buffet breakfast daily and operates a well-regarded sushi and sashimi bar for lunch and dinner, alongside a thoughtful tasting menu. More than simple street food, UNI presents contemporary Japanese izakaya-style dishes that have become a popular amenity for guests. To mark the centennial, UNI added the “C”ocktail to its beverage list: a visually striking drink that reflects The Eliot’s signature red, mixing Roku gin, Lillet Blanc, blood orange, makrut lime leaf, cilantro and sparkling wine, finished with a dried orange garnish.

To commemorate 100 years, The Eliot launched the Centennial Escape promotion: book two nights and receive the third night for $19.25. The package includes accommodations in a newly renovated suite, two in-room “C” cocktails, complimentary breakfast for two each morning in UNI Restaurant, and a late check-out at 2 p.m. The Centennial Escape is available, based on availability, through Dec. 31 and may be booked through The Eliot’s official site.
