Discover Uzbekistan: Food, Culture, and Culinary Traditions

Enjoy a flavorful 10-day culinary journey through Uzbekistan this spring and join in Navruz, the Uzbek New Year celebration. Offered by Seattle-based MIR Corporation, a long-established specialist in travel to Russia and neighboring countries, this itinerary visits the three iconic Silk Road cities of Bukhara, Khiva, and Samarkand.

Your trip begins in Tashkent, where you will see key landmarks such as the Square of Independence, the historic Kukeldash Madrassah, and the colorful Chorsu Bazaar. While in Tashkent, explore the fabric market and share a traditional Uzbek lunch prepared with Chef Bahriddin Chustiy, gaining insight into regional flavors and culinary techniques.

Next you fly to Urgench (UGC) and spend two days discovering Khiva’s ancient Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its striking minarets, winding cobblestone streets, and the Kunya Ark, the former residence of the khans. The itinerary includes a scenic drive across the Kyzyl Kum Desert, with a stop to admire the Amu Darya, one of Central Asia’s longest rivers.

The journey continues toward Samarkand with stops along the way. Visit Gijduvan and the historic Ulugh Beg Observatory, then immerse yourself in the vibrant Siab Bazaar where you’ll take part in a master class to learn how to prepare plov, Uzbekistan’s beloved rice-and-meat dish. You’ll also visit Urgut and its well-known crafts market, and have the opportunity to watch a buzkashi match, a traditional Central Asian sport that tests horsemanship and strength.

This carefully paced tour balances cultural sites, culinary experiences, and local traditions, offering an accessible way to experience Uzbek history, cuisine, and hospitality. Prices start at $3,995 for departures March 16–25, 2018.
