Discover Madrid’s Prado: Must-See Small Masterpieces

Until Nov. 10, size plays a central role at Madrid’s renowned Prado Museum. The collection on display, titled Captive Beauty: Fra Angelico to Fortuny, brings together 281 works from the museum’s holdings that share a defining trait: small format. Across painting, sculpture and mixed media, these compact pieces reveal intricate detail and intimate craftsmanship.

The selection includes portraits rendered on a range of supports — wood panels and canvas alongside less common surfaces like copper plate, tin and slate — demonstrating artists’ skill in miniature scale. Sculpture in bronze, wood, clay, marble, alabaster and polychrome wood is likewise presented on a reduced scale, inviting close inspection of fine modeling and finish.

Seventeen galleries in the Jerónimos Building host the exhibition. Many of the works have not been on public display for years: some were lent to other institutions, while others have been overshadowed in the museum’s galleries by larger or more famous masterpieces. The pieces span a wide chronological range, with the earliest dating to the 14th century, and represent diverse artists, styles and geographic origins.

To enrich the visitor experience the show is accompanied by video material and recorded commentary by Manuela Mena, the museum’s chief curator for 18th-century art and Goya, offering context and insights into the selection and the curatorial approach.

The exhibition offers a fresh way to experience the Prado’s holdings by drawing attention to the aesthetic and technical qualities that emerge at a reduced scale. Intimate in format but generous in artistic value, these works reward close viewing and invite reflection on how size affects perception, technique and emotional impact.

Practical details: the exhibition runs through Nov. 10 in the Jerónimos Building of the Museo del Prado. Visitors interested in portraiture, miniature techniques or the material variety of European and international art traditions will find the show especially rewarding.
