Delta Begins Major Terminal Renovation at LAX: What Travelers Need to Know

Delta Air Lines is investing heavily at Los Angeles International Airport. Last month the airline unveiled a $1.9 billion, seven-year plan to enhance and connect Terminals 2 and 3. As part of the move, Delta will relocate its operations from Terminals 5 and 6 into the modernized Terminal 2/3 complex.

Delta has steadily expanded at LAX since 2009, adding more than 100 daily departures over that period. The Los Angeles World Airports Board of Airport Commissioners has approved the project, which now awaits review and final approvals from the Los Angeles City Council and other regulatory agencies.

When completed, the Terminal 2/3 development will include a private Delta check-in lounge, new Delta Sky Clubs, expedited check-in for Delta Shuttle customers, and an integrated in-line baggage system to improve passenger flow and operational efficiency. The upgrades are designed to create a more seamless travel experience for Delta customers and to strengthen the airline’s presence in Los Angeles.

“This is a significant milestone for Delta in Los Angeles, and it illustrates a strong, successful public-private partnership,” said Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines. “Delta is working hard to become the preferred airline for Angelenos, and this project reinforces our commitment to our LAX hub and to an ever-higher level of service for our customers.”

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti described the agreement as “a monumental step forward,” highlighting the value of collaboration between the city and airport authorities. Bastian added that Delta and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) will continue to work together as the project moves through the city council review and other approval processes.

The Terminal 2/3 redevelopment aligns with broader efforts to modernize LAX and improve passenger amenities and operational capabilities. By consolidating Delta’s operations into a connected terminal complex, the airline expects to offer better connections, faster processing times, and an upgraded lounge experience for frequent travelers and local commuters alike.
