Dallas Fort Worth International Airport has become the first and only airport in North America — and one of just 23 worldwide — to achieve Carbon Neutral status from the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. This highest level of recognition acknowledges the airport’s measured reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and its achievement in neutralizing its carbon footprint for a full year.
Carbon Neutral status is granted only after an airport demonstrates that its net carbon dioxide emissions over an entire year are zero. To reach that level, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport balanced the carbon dioxide it produced by absorbing or offsetting an equivalent amount.
“This major achievement demonstrates DFW Airport’s commitment to serving our community and our world with a comprehensive, holistic approach to sustainability. Our team has made major strides in reducing DFW’s carbon footprint by how we manage precious resources such as energy and water, and how the airport manages vehicle fuels, emissions, waste, recycling and our land,” said Sean Donohue, CEO of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
Since launching its sustainability initiatives in 2010, the airport has cut carbon emissions per passenger by 29 percent and reduced energy costs by 38 percent. It covers 100 percent of its annual electricity consumption with renewable energy credits and has lowered overall energy use through advanced heating and cooling systems. Water-saving fixtures installed in terminal restrooms have halved water use across the terminals, conserving about 5 million gallons each month. Nearly the entire airport vehicle fleet operates on clean-burning compressed natural gas, further reducing local emissions.
“We recognize that environmental improvement is an economic, social and business imperative for the airport and for the community we serve. Sustainability touches everyone and this work helps ensure a brighter tomorrow for our children as well as our Dallas Fort Worth area partners and neighbors,” said Jim Crites, executive vice president for operations at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
DFW’s Carbon Neutral accreditation reflects a multi-faceted strategy combining operational improvements, investments in cleaner technologies, and the purchase of offsets to address emissions that remain. The airport’s efforts include energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy procurement, water conservation measures, and cleaner vehicle fuels, all of which contribute to a measurable and verifiable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Achieving Carbon Neutral status also demonstrates DFW Airport’s role as a leader in sustainable aviation infrastructure. By focusing on measurable outcomes — reduced energy demand, lower per-passenger emissions, and extensive water savings — the airport provides a model for other facilities seeking to manage environmental impacts while maintaining operations and service quality.
Going forward, the airport plans to continue refining its sustainability programs, seeking additional efficiency improvements, expanding renewable energy use where possible, and pursuing further reductions in fleet and facility emissions. These ongoing efforts aim to maintain the Carbon Neutral status and to support long-term environmental and community benefits throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth region.
