Curio Collection Opens First Hotel in the Netherlands

Curio Collection by Hilton arrived in the Netherlands in 2020 with the opening of The Monastery Hotel Koningsbosch. Housed in a historic monastery dating from 1873, the property sits in Limburg province near the borders with Germany and Belgium.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president of development for EMEA at Hilton, said the hotel “offers travelers an authentic local experience within the historic surroundings of the former monastery building. The Netherlands continues to prosper as a thriving tourist destination, and this project gives guests another opportunity to enjoy our world-class hospitality.”

The hotel features 200 guestrooms alongside an upscale restaurant and bar, all set within striking neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque architecture. The rural location provides guests with opportunities for cycling and hiking, while still offering convenient access to regional hubs such as Düsseldorf. Nearby religious sites and monuments add to the cultural appeal for visitors.

Gelasius Vastgoedmaatschappij B.V., the local partner that signed a management agreement with Hilton, said it worked closely with municipal authorities to secure the monastery’s long-term future as an operational hotel. The company added that the environmental permit was expected to be granted soon, enabling restoration and renovation work to begin. Once complete, the project is projected to create hundreds of jobs and deliver a positive international economic impact on the region.

The Monastery Hotel Koningsbosch combines heritage architecture with contemporary hospitality offerings, aiming to attract both leisure and business travelers. By preserving the building’s architectural character while introducing modern amenities, the property seeks to enhance regional tourism and support local economic development. Visitors will find a blend of historic ambiance and modern comforts, with outdoor recreation and cultural sites easily accessible from the hotel.

As part of Curio Collection by Hilton, the hotel benefits from a brand focus on unique, locally rooted experiences, positioning the monastery as a distinct destination within the Dutch hospitality landscape. The conversion of the 19th-century complex into a 21st-century hotel reflects growing interest in adaptive reuse projects that preserve historic structures while providing contemporary services and amenities.

With its sizable guestroom count, food and beverage offerings, and scenic setting near international borders, The Monastery Hotel Koningsbosch is designed to serve a diverse range of travelers. The anticipated restoration work and subsequent opening underline the potential for heritage-led tourism to support job creation and economic growth in Limburg and the surrounding cross-border region.
