China Increases Cybersecurity and Baggage Screening Investments

Chinese airports and airlines are investing more in IT, cybersecurity, and baggage handling than many of their overseas counterparts to manage a surge in passenger traffic. Passenger numbers climbed 13 percent last year, surpassing 1 billion, and carriers and airports in China have responded by increasing technology and security spending to keep operations running smoothly.

According to the SITA 2018 Air Transport IT Insights report, Chinese airports increased their IT spending from 5.6 percent of revenue in 2017 to 7.5 percent in 2018, outpacing the global average of 5.69 percent. This rise reflects a broader commitment across the region to modernize systems and improve passenger services as volumes grow.

The report evaluated nine cybersecurity domains and found that airlines and airports in China reported higher adoption rates across all areas than the global average. That stronger focus on cyber defenses mirrors rising concerns about data protection and the operational risks of an increasingly connected aviation ecosystem.

Baggage handling is another area where China is spending heavily. The report highlights plans by airlines to improve tracking: by 2019, carriers expect to track bags at every point of the journey for half of their route networks. Additionally, 94 percent of airlines planned to have transfer and arrival tracking in place, reflecting industry-wide efforts to reduce mishandled luggage and improve the passenger experience.

Globally, self-service technologies, cybersecurity, and biometric systems rank among the top priorities for airports. In the survey, 95 percent of respondents identified cybersecurity as a primary concern. High-profile data breaches in recent years, such as incidents affecting Cathay Pacific and British Airways, have underscored the urgency of strengthening information security and protecting traveler data.

Overall, the SITA findings suggest that Chinese aviation stakeholders are accelerating investment in digital systems and security measures to support rapid passenger growth and to align with international trends toward greater automation, improved tracking, and more resilient IT infrastructures.
