Chile Open for Business: What Investors Need to Know Now

Chile’s Secretary of Tourism and the National Tourism Service report that about 90 percent of the country’s tourism destinations are operating normally following the April 1, 8.2-magnitude earthquake. The quake’s epicenter was located roughly 1,100 miles from Santiago.

Tourist areas across Chile—from the Antofagasta region and San Pedro de Atacama in the north, to Bahía Inglesa, Caldera, La Serena and the Elqui Valley—are functioning and open to visitors. The capital and its surrounding areas, Valparaíso and its wine routes, and central regions such as O’Higgins, Maule and Bío Bío continue to welcome travelers.

In the south, destinations in Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos, including the region that hosts Torres del Paine National Park, are also operational. Overall, the vast majority of Chile’s tourism infrastructure remains intact and accessible.

All major airports in the country, including Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez Airport, remain open for normal operations. Airports in areas closer to the earthquake’s impact, such as those serving Arica and Iquique, are open as well; however, travelers should confirm flight schedules and updates directly with their airlines before traveling.

If you are planning a trip, local authorities and tourism services are available to provide current information about accommodations, road conditions and visitor services. Most principal attractions, hotels and tour operators across the country have resumed regular activities, and regional tourism offices continue to support visitors and ensure safety.

Chile’s diverse destinations—from the Atacama Desert to the Patagonian fjords—offer a wide range of experiences and remain largely accessible after the event. Visitors are encouraged to check with local operators for the latest details and to respect any safety guidance from local officials while traveling in affected regions.
