A month-long observance begins Aug. 29 when 18 tall ships arrive at ports along Lake Erie’s shores to mark the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial Celebration. Running through Sept. 30, the program features a fleet of tall ships participating in a reenactment of the Battle of Lake Erie, the 1813 engagement in which Oliver Hazard Perry’s U.S. Navy squadron defeated a British fleet near present-day Put-in-Bay, Ohio.
Visitors can take part in hands-on experiences: reenactment crew and militia positions are available for purchase, offering an up-close, onboard role in the historic performances. The celebration’s schedule includes concerts, live entertainment, historical demonstrations, marching bands, fireworks, ship tours, a reenactment village, and a wide selection of food and craft vendors.
