Celebrate the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial: Relive Historic Seafaring Days

A month-long observance begins Aug. 29 when 18 tall ships arrive at ports along Lake Erie’s shores to mark the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial Celebration. Running through Sept. 30, the program features a fleet of tall ships participating in a reenactment of the Battle of Lake Erie, the 1813 engagement in which Oliver Hazard Perry’s U.S. Navy squadron defeated a British fleet near present-day Put-in-Bay, Ohio.

Visitors can take part in hands-on experiences: reenactment crew and militia positions are available for purchase, offering an up-close, onboard role in the historic performances. The celebration’s schedule includes concerts, live entertainment, historical demonstrations, marching bands, fireworks, ship tours, a reenactment village, and a wide selection of food and craft vendors.

The event aims to combine living history with family-friendly activities, giving attendees opportunities to learn about early 19th-century naval life, watch period drills and combat demonstrations, and explore the tall ships while vendors and performers create a vibrant festival atmosphere. Whether you want a front-row seat for the reenactment, a guided tour of the vessels, or more immersive participation as part of the crew, the bicentennial observance offers multiple ways to engage with this pivotal moment in Great Lakes history.
