Building a Home From the Ground Up: Step-by-Step Guide

Describe The Guest Experience At Grootbos.

Grootbos Nature Reserve, located between Stanford and Gansbaai in South Africa, overlooks the dramatic Walker Bay. Guest accommodation combines comfort and elegance: each suite features a luxurious canopy bed, a generous bathroom, a separate lounge with a fireplace and a wooden deck that opens onto sweeping views. Meals emphasize local produce—bread and pasta are made on site—and only wines from the surrounding region are served.

Visitors can explore the reserve through a variety of guided eco-tours that highlight the area’s diverse habitats. Walks, 4×4 excursions and horseback rides give guests close-up access to the region’s fynbos (Afrikaans for “fine bush”). During whale season, Dyer Island Cruises offers marine conservation–focused outings so guests can observe southern right whales in their natural environment.

What Is The Philosophy Of The Resort?

Grootbos has led private eco-tourism and conservation initiatives in the Western Cape for many years. The reserve’s core goals are to conserve and rehabilitate natural habitats, promote environmental education, provide vocational training for unemployed local residents, develop community sports facilities and operate an indigenous plant nursery. These efforts reflect a commitment to sustainable tourism that benefits both the land and the people who live nearby.

What Community Efforts And Contributions Does Grootbos Make?

From its earliest days, Grootbos has pursued both biodiversity conservation and community upliftment. The non-profit Grootbos Foundation, created in 2004, administers the reserve’s environmental and social development programs.

The Green Futures Horticultural and Life Skills College offers an annual training program for 12 unemployed young people from the Gansbaai area. The curriculum covers horticulture and indigenous gardening alongside life skills such as first aid, basic numeracy and literacy, health education, HIV/AIDS awareness, interpersonal communication, money management, basic computer use and introductory business skills. Graduates receive a nationally accredited horticulture certificate and support with job placement.

The Gansbaai Communal Sports Centre provides local youth with access to quality sports facilities, equipment and coaching. Growing the Future Food Production and Life Skills College trains eight women each year from Stanford in vegetable and fruit production, beekeeping and small-scale animal husbandry; half the program focuses on life skills to support long-term resilience and independence.

What Is Your Proudest Accomplishment As A Hotelier And Resort Owner?

When I first arrived at Grootbos in May 1991, the view took my breath away. Leaving my previous life and moving my family here to buy the farm felt risky, and some friends thought I was mad. Yet that decision set the foundation for everything that followed.

In 1996, when fynbos specialist Sean Privett joined the team, I began to understand the true value of the land surrounding my home. Success came through hard work, enthusiasm, integrity and close family collaboration. Looking back, I could not have predicted that the original farm and the neighboring properties acquired later would grow into what Grootbos is today.

While I take pride in building a world-class tourism operation, my deepest satisfaction comes from our conservation achievements and the ways we have supported and partnered with local communities.
