Berlin Airport Delays May Persist Through 2021—What Travelers Need to Know

Berlin’s new airport faces further delays, and the unfinished Brandenburg facility (BER) may not open until 2021. The original opening date was set for 2012 and was most recently postponed to the end of 2018.

According to Der Tagesspiegel, “Three weeks before the planned announcement of an opening date, delays are again threatened at the unfinished BER site.” Industry observers had expected an update in mid-December about when BER would finally begin operations, but fresh setbacks have pushed that timeline into doubt.

The delays are rooted in significant problems with the airport’s technical systems. Inspectors have identified shortcomings in critical infrastructure, including sprinkler and fire-protection systems that do not function reliably. Such deficiencies must be addressed thoroughly before certification and public opening can proceed, which adds time to the completion process.

While the airport terminal remains incomplete, auxiliary services and infrastructure continue limited activity to preserve readiness. Rail operator Deutsche Bahn has been running trains into and out of the BER complex to keep track and signaling systems operational. Yet much of the surrounding development remains underused: the four-star, 322-room Steigenberger Hotel, completed in 2012 to serve passengers and staff, still stands empty.

The extended timeline for BER highlights the complexity of large-scale transport projects and the consequences of technical and organizational shortcomings. Ensuring safe, fully functioning systems is a prerequisite for opening, and authorities appear to be prioritizing thorough remediation over a rushed launch. As a result, any confirmed opening date will depend on the successful resolution of the identified defects and subsequent certification by relevant safety and regulatory bodies.

For residents and travelers, the continued postponement means altered expectations for improved connectivity and airport services in the Berlin region. Local planners and businesses must adapt to the prolonged delay, while project managers must provide clear, verifiable progress updates to restore public trust in the airport’s completion schedule.

At this stage, stakeholders are watching closely for formal announcements from officials and engineering teams about remedial work and a realistic timetable for when BER can welcome passengers at last.
