Animal Welfare First: Inside a Wildlife Game Lodge Experience

Shamwari Private Game Reserve in South Africa is midway through a ZAR 25 million refurbishment, with work scheduled for completion in November 2019. The reserve, situated near Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, operates as a 5-star conservation-focused destination that prioritizes animal welfare and rehabilitation over trophy displays.

Central to Shamwari’s mission is a long-running conservation and rehabilitation program, established 25 years ago. The reserve hosts an on-site wildlife rehabilitation center and two big cat sanctuaries managed in partnership with the Born Free Foundation. The rehabilitation center is recognised for its success in treating and releasing healthy animals back into the wild, while big cats that cannot be safely released are provided permanent, carefully managed homes in the sanctuaries.

Spanning 25,000 hectares, the property includes six 5-star lodges, Explorer Camp, multiple education and rehabilitation facilities, and extensive areas of free-roaming wildlife. Recent renovations have enhanced the guest experience while maintaining a strong focus on conservation and education.

At the flagship Eagles Crag Lodge, upgrades include a new viewing deck with a fire pit, private dining pods, expanded spa amenities and a refreshed entertainment lounge in the main area. Guests staying at Eagles Crag can choose from nine stand-alone suites, each with a private deck overlooking the surrounding forest, outdoor showers and heated plunge pools, providing a blend of comfort and close-to-nature experience.

Riverdene Family Lodge has also been updated to better serve families. New interconnecting rooms offer flexible accommodation for parents and children, and a supervised family area includes a children’s adventure playground, a toddler play space and a mini soccer field. Family-focused programming invites younger guests to learn about wildlife through activities such as supervised visits to the big cat sanctuaries, animal behaviour expeditions led in partnership with the Born Free Foundation, stargazing sessions and a dedicated Kids on Safari program.

Shamwari’s approach combines luxury hospitality with practical conservation outcomes: guests enjoy immersive wildlife experiences while supporting a facility that rehabilitates animals, educates visitors and protects free-roaming species across a significant protected landscape.
