Arrival/Check-In: I arrived in Maui after several days of business on Oahu, ready for a relaxing weekend. A quick 25-minute taxi ride brought me to Wailea and the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort. A tranquil outdoor walkway lined with water led into the open-air, expansive lobby on the top floor, which offers layered views of pools, restaurants and guestrooms cascading down toward the beach. Check-in was smooth and welcoming; a friendly front desk associate sat me on a couch with a water view while they completed the formalities.
Guest Quarters: My third-floor room provided a partial ocean view and overlooked the adults-only pool area framed by lush landscaping. The space felt bright and fresh, with white stone floors, a white sofa and tasteful lighting accents. Wide glass doors opened to a sizable balcony where I enjoyed the breeze and coastal sounds. The king-size bed was comfortable and, with the doors open in the evening, the sound of the waves became a pleasant backdrop. A flat-screen TV faced a small living area, and a desk sat nearby for work or planning activities. The mini-fridge was stocked daily with water, juice and local craft soft drinks at no extra charge.
The bathroom efficiently used the available space. Dark stone floors contrasted with a long single-sink vanity, which included good lighting and a chair tucked underneath. Flush white doors revealed a generous closet and a separate water closet. A floor-to-ceiling mirror helped expand the feel of the room. The full-length shower featured multiple jets and a rain-shower option; when the blinds were open, it looked into the bedroom—an intimate feature that honeymooners might especially appreciate.
Services/Amenities: Exploring the grounds is a pleasure. The resort features three distinct pools and a broad grassy area for lounging or light recreation, all leading down to a well-maintained beach. Staff are available to set up lounge chairs and umbrellas for beachgoers. The sandy shoreline is one of the best in Wailea for swimming and snorkeling, and I spent much of my time there. For activity seekers, the beach team organizes outrigger canoe excursions, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) and kayak tours. I tried SUP for the first time; despite a few spills, it was a rewarding experience. The concierge also arranged a sunrise snorkeling trip to Molokini Crater, which was a highlight.
Dining at the Andaz Maui is varied and satisfying. For relaxed poolside fare, Bumbye Beach Bar is convenient. For a more elevated experience, aim for a reservation at Ka’ana Kitchen and try the chef’s table tasting menu—the farm-to-table cuisine highlights local ingredients. Bartenders are adept at crafting custom cocktails to complement dishes; the grilled octopus paired particularly well with the drinks I sampled. One bartender, Archer, elevated the experience by serving cocktails with ice cubes infused with flowers and herbs, a memorable and elegant touch.
