As of Sept. 5, passengers booking American Airlines’ basic economy fares may bring one carry-on bag onboard at no charge, in addition to one personal item that must fit under the seat in front of them.
Previously, basic economy travelers were prohibited from bringing carry-on bags and faced a $25 fee to check a bag and another $25 fee to gate-check. The airline reversed that policy after reporting lower-than-expected revenue from ancillary fees and deciding that allowing a free carry-on would make its basic economy product more competitive with other major U.S. carriers. Delta has long permitted one free carry-on, while United had continued to charge for economy carry-ons.
This change could intensify competition for overhead bin space. Passengers who board late and cannot find room for their carry-on will be able to gate-check the bag without paying an extra fee.
Even with the carry-on allowance, basic economy travelers should expect other additional charges, such as fees for seat selection, which typically range from $10 to $40 depending on the flight and seat choice.
