American Airlines Adds Premium Economy to All Widebody Aircraft

American Airlines announced it has completed the installation of premium economy seats across its entire wide-body fleet. With this rollout, the carrier now offers more than 3,000 premium economy seats—surpassing the combined total offered by other U.S. carriers. American was the first U.S. airline to introduce a premium economy cabin when it launched the product in 2016.

On long-haul international routes, premium economy is positioned behind Flagship Business class; on select domestic flights it sits behind Flagship First. The cabin is available on all Boeing 787 and Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Features include increased legroom, wider seats, greater recline and an enhanced dining service. Passengers in premium economy also receive an amenity kit and are allowed two checked bags at no extra charge.

“Premium economy is the perfect complement to the many travel experiences we offer, providing customers with even more options when flying,” said Janelle Anderson, vice president of global marketing at American Airlines. “As the first U.S. airline to introduce premium economy, we continue to invest in new ways to ensure customers’ time with American is well spent, including high-speed WiFi, live TV, upgraded ground amenities and more.”

American Airlines also plans to grow its premium economy capacity by more than 10 percent in 2020, expanding options for travelers seeking a higher level of comfort without moving into business class.
