On the Ground: Despite long, disorderly lines and a delayed departure from Sicily, my flight arrived in Milan on schedule, giving me time to visit the premium-class lounge before my connection to New York. The lounge, however, was packed—“standing room only”—and the bar area was overwhelmed with passengers ordering cappuccinos and other drinks. I stayed just long enough to grab a Diet Coke. Knowing I wouldn’t get any work done amid the noise, I headed toward the gate, browsing a few shops along the way. The gate area was similarly crowded, but boarding began shortly after, so the wait didn’t stretch on. (25/30)
Pre-flight: Boarding proceeded slowly overall, yet Magnifica class had a separate line that moved more quickly, so I boarded without much delay. Once aboard, my jacket was taken, a drink was offered, and I settled into my seat. Magnifica class may not feature the newest cabin design compared with some competitors, but it is roomy and comfortable. The seat doesn’t convert to a fully flat bed, yet it provides enough comfort for a restful sleep when you get settled. (27/30)
In-flight: The Milan–New York segment included a full lunch service and, shortly before landing, a light snack. Lunch began with mixed nuts, followed by modest portions of two pasta dishes and a choice between fish or beef. Although I’m not usually drawn to either option, hunger won out and I chose the beef (I’d had fish on the outbound flight), and it was enjoyable. A cheese-and-fruit course preceded dessert and coffee. The pre-landing snack consisted of a small salad with cheese and bread. Personal entertainment screens rose from the armrest and offered a solid selection of music plus a mix of recent releases and classic films. I started a movie but fell asleep before the opening credits finished, sleeping soundly for about three and a half hours. (39/40)
The Experience: Overall, my time on Alitalia was pleasant, particularly in the air. Flight attendants were attentive without being intrusive, and the food and onboard amenities were satisfying. The main drawback was the ground experience, where disorganization at check-in and in the lounge area slightly diminished the trip’s beginning.
