Air New Zealand is introducing a refreshed economy-class offering for long-haul travelers with its Economy Skynest concept. The service, available to economy and premium economy passengers, will be sold in four-hour sessions. Initially, two sessions will be offered on each flight, and the first route to receive the service will be New York (JFK) to Auckland (AKL).

The Skynest area consists of six private pods designed to help passengers rest and recharge during flight. Each pod includes a lie-flat bed with a full-length mattress, seasonal blankets, adjustable ambient lighting, individual USB outlets, a privacy curtain and an amenity kit labeled “Nestcessities.” Positioned between the economy and premium economy cabins, the pods offer passengers a dedicated space to stretch out and sleep more comfortably than in a standard economy seat.

“New Zealand’s unique location means we understand long haul travel better than anyone. On some of the world’s longest commercial flights to and from New Zealand, Skynest is designed to make a real difference to the journey. Featuring six lie-flat pods in a bunk-style layout between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins, it gives customers the opportunity to stretch out, lie flat and get a few hours’ proper rest in the air,” said Nikhil Ravishankar, CEO, Air New Zealand.

Bookings for Economy Skynest open on May 18 for travel on Air New Zealand’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner starting in November. Pricing begins at $495 per four-hour session, offering an option for travelers who want to arrive better rested without upgrading to a premium cabin.
