Air Canada has partnered with 4ocean, the global ocean cleanup company, to reduce and eliminate single-use plastics across its aircraft and in airport lounges. This summer the airline will begin removing plastic stir sticks from both cabins and lounges, and employees are being invited to take part in 4ocean coastal cleanups in North America during 2019.
Air Canada’s ongoing plastic-reduction program will continue with research to identify additional single-use plastics that can be eliminated, replaced with sustainable alternatives, or collected for recycling.
“We are ecstatic to partner with Air Canada in an initiative to eliminate single-use plastic,” said Tony Chvala, COO of 4ocean. “We believe Air Canada’s sustainability program is a giant leap forward in this initiative. 4ocean looks forward to removing thousands of pounds of plastic and waste in collaboration with Air Canada.”
“A key target of Air Canada’s corporate waste strategy is our Single-Use Plastics Reduction program. Our partnership with 4ocean as the exclusive Canadian airline partner is a natural fit for this work, and we are especially pleased to engage our employees in their local communities,” added Teresa Ehman, senior director of environmental affairs at Air Canada. “Many Air Canada employees care deeply about sustainability and the environment, and they are eager to help reduce ocean plastic pollution.”
