Ashford Castle Reopens: Inside Ireland’s Restored Luxury Landmark

Ireland’s prime minister, Enda Kenny, officially reopened the country’s iconic Ashford Castle in County Mayo this month following an extensive two-year renovation. The restoration was aimed at restoring the property’s status among Europe’s finest luxury hotels while blending modern comforts with the castle’s rich history.

Now part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Ashford Castle introduces a range of new facilities and services. Highlights include a 32-seat private cinema, a billiards room, a cigar terrace, a luxury lakeside cottage, boutique wine cellars set up for private dining, and a children’s games room. These additions are designed to enhance the guest experience while preserving the castle’s character.

Beatrice Tollman, president and founder of Red Carnation Hotels, together with her daughter Toni Tollman, led a design team that carefully integrated contemporary elements without compromising the castle’s 800-year heritage. Their approach emphasized respect for the site’s history while upgrading interiors and amenities to meet modern expectations.

All 82 guestrooms and suites were thoughtfully redesigned, each featuring a curated mix of antiques, original artwork, distinctive fabrics and bespoke carpets. The refurbishments also incorporated modern conveniences such as hotel-wide WiFi and updated in-room technologies to ensure comfort and connectivity for today’s travelers.

The castle’s 350-acre estate also saw significant enhancements. Outdoor amenities and activities were upgraded to take full advantage of the grounds, which include Ireland’s oldest School of Falconry, an equestrian center, a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts and dedicated fishing areas. These improvements reinforce Ashford Castle’s reputation as a destination for both relaxation and outdoor pursuits.

A new spa is scheduled to open in July, featuring five treatment rooms, an indoor swimming pool and a gym. The addition of a fully equipped spa facility complements the castle’s luxury offering and provides guests with a complete wellness experience on site.

“After two years during which Mrs. Tollman and her exceptional team, including her daughter Toni Tollman, have invested so much time, passion, expertise and hard work, this restoration and enhancement program is now in its final stages,” said Jonathan Raggett, managing director of Red Carnation Hotels. “Ashford Castle reopens as the jewel in our collection and is undoubtedly one of Europe’s finest luxury hotels.”
