KLM Royal Dutch Airlines now offers an augmented reality feature that helps travelers quickly check whether their hand baggage meets permitted size limits. Integrated into the KLM app, the tool uses a smartphone camera to project a transparent, virtual KLM suitcase next to a traveler’s real bag, allowing an immediate visual comparison of dimensions.
At present, the AR hand-baggage checker is available in the KLM app for iPhone and iOS users. The feature remains under development as KLM continues to refine the experience in line with advances in AR technology.
“By harnessing the potential of AR, KLM is taking the next step in digital service provision. With the AR hand baggage check, passengers can now see at a glance whether their hand baggage is the correct size. By offering this service, we are placing the needs of our customers first. We also continue to be pioneers of innovation in our passengers’ best interests,” said Pieter Groeneveld, senior vice president, digital, Air France-KLM.
This AR addition complements other tools designed to improve the travel experience via the KLM app. Recently, a 360-degree Dreamliner aircraft display was added, giving users an interactive way to explore cabin layouts and features before boarding.
The KLM app is widely used by millions of travelers, with more than 100,000 active users each day. Over 70 percent of those users stay logged in and access the app repeatedly throughout their journey—before, during and after travel—making the app a central hub for trip planning and in-flight preparations.
By combining practical utilities such as the AR baggage checker with immersive features like the Dreamliner view, KLM aims to streamline pre-flight routines and reduce last-minute luggage issues at the gate. As the airline refines these digital services, travelers can expect more accessible, user-friendly tools that focus on convenience and clarity.
While initially launched for iOS, KLM has indicated ongoing development that may expand compatibility and add further refinements as augmented reality capabilities evolve. For now, iPhone users can test the AR suitcase in the KLM app to quickly determine whether their carry-on will meet the airline’s size requirements and avoid potential surprises at the airport.
