China Southern and Finnair Launch Expanded Codeshare Partnership

China Southern Airlines and Finnair have launched a reciprocal codeshare agreement that places each carrier’s flight code on selected services between Helsinki (HEL) and Guangzhou (CAN) and on a range of routes operated by both airlines across Europe and China. This collaboration strengthens connectivity between northern Europe and multiple Chinese cities, offering passengers more seamless travel options and expanded route choices.

Under the new arrangement, China Southern will add its code to Finnair-operated flights linking Helsinki with eight European destinations. These cities include Amsterdam (AMS), Billund (BLL), Copenhagen (CPH), Gothenburg (GOT), London (LHR), Paris (CDG), Riga (RIX) and Stockholm (ARN). By placing China Southern’s code on these routes, the airline can better serve customers originating in or connecting through northern Europe, making it easier to book through itineraries and coordinate schedules.

At the same time, Finnair’s code will be applied to China Southern services on the Helsinki–Guangzhou route and to selected China-bound flights operated by China Southern. Travelers flying from Europe will gain straightforward connections through Guangzhou to eight Chinese destinations served by China Southern: Changsha (CSX), Chongqing (CKG), Hangzhou (HGH), Nanjing (NKG), Sanya (SYX), Wenzhou (WNZ), Xiamen (XMN) and Xi’an (XIY). These added connections support both leisure and business travel by linking major regional hubs and popular destinations.

The codeshare comes as part of an ongoing expansion of services between Greater China and Helsinki. Finnair has recently extended its Helsinki–Guangzhou service to year-round operations, increasing the frequency of flights between the two regions during peak periods. Over the summer season, Finnair operates up to 42 weekly flights between Greater China and Helsinki, including four weekly flights to Guangzhou, enhancing overall capacity and offering more flexible scheduling for passengers transferring onwards.

From a customer perspective, the agreement improves booking flexibility and through-ticketing options, reduces the complexity of multi-leg itineraries, and can simplify baggage handling and transfers when journeys involve both carriers. For frequent flyers and those seeking smoother transit experiences, reciprocal codeshares often bring conveniences such as single-ticket check-in for connecting flights and aligned service information across partner airlines’ platforms.

For the airlines, the partnership is a strategic move to broaden market reach without immediately adding new aircraft or creating parallel routes. By sharing flight codes, China Southern and Finnair can promote one another’s services across each carrier’s sales channels and loyalty programs, tapping into established customer bases in Europe and China while strengthening route networks in key cities.

Overall, this codeshare agreement enhances connectivity between northern Europe and several Chinese cities, offering travelers more direct connection opportunities through Helsinki and Guangzhou. The combined network coverage provides practical benefits for passengers and supports stronger commercial ties between the two carriers as demand for travel between Europe and China continues to recover and evolve.
