Raindrops the size of egg yolks hammered the roof of my car as I drove the 15 miles from my suburban home to The Langham Boston. It was late August, but the steady downpour and an unseasonable chill made the day feel more like early March.
I was on a mission: to find shelter from the stormy weather and a reprieve from an unsettled mood born of too much work and too little play. My sister Nancy, a busy working mother of two, rode shotgun. We’re often so attuned to one another that we can nearly read each other’s thoughts, and we always pick up on one another’s mood.
We were embarking on a girls’ spa getaway to Chuan Body + Soul, the compact Boston iteration of Langham Hotels International’s Chuan Spa. Though smaller than the full-size Chuan Spas found at Langham properties in places like Auckland, Melbourne, Hong Kong and London, this mini-version delivers treatments rooted in the same traditional principles.
Treatments at Chuan Body + Soul draw on ideas from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a wellness system that dates back millennia. Once considered alternative, aspects of TCM—such as herbal remedies, acupuncture, cupping and targeted massage—are increasingly present in both spas and some conventional medical practices. TCM centers on the concept of qi, or life energy, and seeks to restore balance by clearing blockages so qi can flow freely. The spa adapts these ideas into accessible, restorative treatments rather than presenting a strict, clinical practice of TCM.
We arrived at the spa reception, where an attendant greeted us and led us to a compact locker room to change into robes and slippers. Langham operates two Chuan Body + Soul locations, in Boston and Pasadena, California; both are scaled-down versions of the larger Chuan Spa properties but still aim to deliver a potent and relaxing experience.
Space in the Boston location is limited. With no separate lounge off the locker room, we returned to the reception area to meet our therapists and complete intake questionnaires designed to assess our physical and emotional states that day. The forms help therapists tailor treatments by identifying which elements of the body and mind need attention. Chuan Body + Soul at The Langham Boston has two treatment rooms—one dedicated for couples but also used for individual sessions. We chose separate rooms for our treatments. Nancy’s therapist led her through a heavy door, and a few minutes later my therapist and I followed.
I expected the hushed atmosphere of the reception and changing area to continue throughout the spa, so I was surprised to find myself passing through the fitness room—treadmills humming and weights clanging—then climbing a short flight of stairs to the pool deck before taking a few more steps down into the treatment space. The transition was mildly jarring, but once the therapist closed the door and dimmed the lights, my spa mood returned immediately.
Settled and cocooned on the massage table, my therapist began a balancing treatment informed by the theory of Wu Xing, which holds that optimal health comes when the body’s five elements—metal, wood, water, fire and earth—are in harmony. My intake form had indicated that my fire element was out of balance, and the therapist focused on acupressure points and techniques meant to release that excess and restore equilibrium.
I had booked the Body Elements package, a 90-minute session that combined the Chuan Harmony Massage with an Aromatic Bliss Facial. The service used acupressure and mindful touch to address blocked energy points, while also incorporating soothing aromatherapy and conventional spa techniques. The result felt familiar and comforting rather than experimental—an elegant fusion of traditional principles and modern spa comfort.
Chuan Body + Soul doesn’t present itself as a clinical center for authentic Traditional Chinese Medicine. Instead, it translates TCM concepts into a modern, restorative spa experience. For those seeking to unwind and rebalance in a luxurious setting, it achieves that balancing act remarkably well. The treatments are approachable, the therapists attentive, and the environment—despite the short trek through the fitness area—becomes a tranquil refuge once you step inside.
