Still operating since its founding in 1880, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad remains a living piece of rail history. Originally part of the Rio Grande San Juan Extension, this coal-fired, steam-powered railroad runs along a 64-mile narrow-gauge track that crosses the New Mexico–Colorado state line 11 times on the journey between Chama, NM, and Antonito, Colo. The route climbs to the 10,015-foot summit at Cumbres Pass and descends through the dramatic 800-foot-deep Toltec Gorge, offering sweeping views of high-country terrain.
Recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2013, the railroad operates seasonally from late spring through fall.
