The recently renovated Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge on Alaska’s remote Fox Island offers guests an authentic Alaskan stay where local wild salmon is both served and celebrated. The lodge now features an interactive culinary program that teaches visitors how to prepare salmon belly, a flavorful but often overlooked part of the fish.
Following extensive improvements and the reopening this past summer, the lodge’s 3,300-square-foot main building includes a new kitchen where chefs lead hands-on demonstrations. In less than an hour, guests learn safe handling, simple preparation techniques, and cooking methods that highlight the rich taste and texture of salmon belly. Participants leave with complimentary recipe cards so they can recreate the dishes at home.
“Wild Alaska salmon — catching it, preparing it and eating it — is a big part of the Alaska experience,” said Dee Buchanon, director of marketing, CIRI Alaska Tourism Corporation. “Our chefs are able to share so much about Alaska and our way of life just by teaching guests about seafood.” The program gives visitors insight into local culinary traditions while providing practical skills they can use long after their trip ends.
Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge is the only lodging option on Fox Island and sits on the shores of Resurrection Bay, just outside Kenai Fjords National Park. The lodge is a short boat ride from Seward, Alaska, and is designed to deliver a quiet, nature-focused retreat. Eight guest cabins are available, deliberately simple and without telephone, television, or radio, allowing guests to disconnect and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Nightly rates begin at $489 and include a complimentary Kenai Fjords Tour day cruise into Resurrection Bay. The cruise offers excellent opportunities to view glaciers, marine wildlife, and the dramatic coastal landscape that defines the region.
