Swiss International Air Lines has become the world’s first airline certified as “allergy-friendly” by the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF). In partnership with ECARF, SWISS has developed measures intended to make flying more comfortable and safer for passengers with allergies.
Beginning in May, SWISS will roll out a range of ground and in-flight offerings focused on allergy-friendly travel. These initiatives include alternative food and beverage choices—specifically lactose- and gluten-free options—and adjustments to cabin service and onboard products to reduce common allergen exposures.
Food and drink changes will feature lactose-free coffee cream and a lactose-free variant of the airline’s popular chocolate bar. Depending on flight duration, passengers will be able to request allergy-friendly snacks such as certain candy bars, yogurt, or cakes. Special meals can also be ordered in all classes on long-haul services and in business class on European flights, provided the request is made up to 24 hours before departure.
Beyond catering, SWISS will offer cabin-product alternatives and service modifications to lower allergen risk. First- and business-class travelers will be able to choose synthetic-filled pillows instead of down-filled options. The carrier will also eliminate decorative flowers and air fresheners from cabins to minimize airborne triggers.
“We have seen a steady increase over the past few years in our customers’ need for an air travel environment that pays due regard to any allergic conditions,” said Frank Maier, head of product and services at SWISS. “We’ve been working with ECARF to provide a concrete response to these demands to make everyone’s air travel experience as pleasant and problem-free as possible.”
