The Pantanal, one of the world’s largest tropical wetland regions, is the focus of a new photography safari offered by active touring specialists Ciclismo Classico. The expedition will be led by master photographer and documentary filmmaker Ossian Lindholm, who brings extensive experience documenting wildlife and remote landscapes. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, the Pantanal supports an extraordinary variety of species and ecosystems, including influences from the Amazon, the Brazilian savannah (Cerrado) and the Paraguayan Chaco.
Participants will have multiple opportunities to photograph the region’s vibrant birdlife—such as hyacinth macaws and toco toucans—as well as larger mammals and reptiles. Typical wildlife sightings in the Pantanal include tapirs, giant anteaters, howler monkeys, caiman, giant river otters and capybaras. Local naturalist guides will lead jungle hikes, motorboat and canoe excursions through the wetlands, and targeted outings designed to increase the chances of encountering jaguars in their natural habitat.
Accommodations on the tour emphasize authentic regional experience: nights are spent at working fazendas (plantations), providing close access to diverse habitats and excellent dawn and dusk photography opportunities. On the water, guests can canoe along the Rio Clarinho and join motorboat trips through marshes and channels. Activities also include piranha fishing and hands-on guidance from experienced wildlife spotters to maximize photographic results in varying light and weather conditions.
The itinerary balances active fieldwork with photography instruction, allowing participants to refine composition, exposure and wildlife portrait techniques under the mentorship of Lindholm. Small group sizes ensure personalized feedback and better access to wildlife-rich areas. Field briefings cover ethical wildlife photography practices, safe behavior around animals, and ways to minimize disturbance while capturing compelling images.
This photography-focused safari is scheduled for Aug. 28–Sept. 5. Pricing starts at $6,790. The program is designed for photographers of varying skill levels who seek immersive encounters with one of South America’s most biologically rich wetlands, complemented by cultural experiences on working fazendas and expert-led excursions on rivers and marshes.
