Later this year, Delta Air Lines will expand its route network across four major western U.S. cities: Los Angeles (LAX), Austin (AUS), San Francisco (SFO) and Salt Lake City (SLC). The carrier plans to begin these new services in late 2019 and early 2020 using its new Airbus A220 fleet.
Beginning Dec. 21, Delta will operate the A220 on the Los Angeles–Austin route. The airline will also deploy the A220 on its Los Angeles–Seattle (SEA) service, providing more frequency and modern amenities on both routes.
Fares on the new San Francisco–Salt Lake City service are projected to start at about $78 for economy and $222 for first class, giving travelers a competitive option for regional travel. On the San Francisco–Seattle route, basic economy fares are expected from roughly $71, with first class fares near $160, reflecting Delta’s pricing for short-haul premium service.
Delta becomes the first North American carrier to place the A220 into commercial service, joining international operators such as Lufthansa Group, Korean Air and airBaltic that have already received the type. The A220 is marketed for its fuel efficiency, passenger comfort and suitability for both short- and medium-haul routes.
The Delta A220 cabin will seat 109 passengers: 12 in First Class, 15 in Delta Comfort+ and 82 in the main cabin. The aircraft offers a modern passenger experience, including high-speed Gogo 2Ku Wi‑Fi, individual power outlets at each seat, wider seats and larger overhead bins, ambient LED lighting and seat-back entertainment screens. These features aim to enhance comfort on routes between major West Coast and inland cities.
With this A220 rollout, Delta is positioning itself to improve regional connectivity while offering travelers upgraded onboard amenities and competitive fares. Frequent flyers and occasional travelers alike can expect newer aircraft and enhanced service on select westbound domestic routes when the A220 enters service later this year.
