Qantas will introduce new tableware inspired by the Dreamliner’s cabin interiors for use on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet.
The serviceware will be provided across first, business and premium economy cabins, and will also be used in selected airport lounges. The 16-piece collection is crafted from fine bone china, complemented by a five-piece stainless steel cutlery set and matching glassware. Designer David Caon says the range was developed specifically for in-flight service.
Caon consulted both cabin crew and the culinary team responsible for Qantas’s menus to understand the practical needs of tableware “at 40,000 feet.” That collaboration informed choices that aim to make onboard dining more flexible and support greater creativity in menu presentation.
Practicality drove several design decisions, including reducing the weight of the cutlery and crockery by around 11 percent. This lighter specification contributes to fuel savings — Qantas estimates the change could save up to 535,000 kilograms of fuel annually.
Beyond efficiency, Caon says the updated tableware is intended to modernize the dining experience and create more opportunities for cabin crew to engage with passengers through enhanced service and presentation.
The new sets are scheduled to enter service on Dec. 15, coinciding with Qantas’s inaugural Dreamliner flight between Melbourne (MLB) and Los Angeles (LAX).
