Newport Prepares for 2018 Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival

The 28th annual Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival will be held Oct. 13–14 in Newport, Rhode Island. This free, family-friendly event draws visitors from across New England to celebrate the bounty of the ocean.

The festival showcases fresh, locally sourced seafood prepared in a wide range of styles. About 30–35 vendors and sampling stations line the wharf alongside the area’s regular businesses. Numerous restaurants along the festival route offer special menus for the weekend, so attendees can enjoy everything from simple bites to chef-driven specialties.

Beyond delicious food, the festival offers a charming waterfront atmosphere. Guests can stroll the historic cobblestone streets, browse market-style booths, and listen to live music throughout the day.

Beverage offerings are plentiful, with event sponsors including well-known names and artisan producers such as Moet & Chandon, Whalers Brewing, Belvedere Vodka, Ardbeg Whisky, Cloudy Bay Vineyards, Captain Morgan Rum, Bulleit Bourbon, Tanqueray Gin, and Don Julio Tequila.

Beatrice Wadson, marketing and communications director for Bowen’s Wharf Co., says visitors can expect “a rollicking good time on the waterfront, boats coming in and out, and local chefs serving up their locally sourced specialties.” She highlights crowd favorites like the Shuckin’ Truck, fried selections at Seafood Hut, and lobster rolls from Matunuck Oyster Bar and Newport Lobster Shack.

Families with young children may find the festival most pleasant between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on either day, when the crowd is generally lighter. Visitors looking for a livelier scene can time their visit for live performances—six popular bands play on the main stage over the two days, and dancing is encouraged.

For those who wish to stay on the wharf, the Seamen’s Church Institute provides guestrooms on the top floor of its historic building. The institute’s building is the only original structure remaining on the historic square and one of the few in the area still serving its original purpose, offering convenient lodging right in the heart of the festival.

Whether you come for the seafood, the waterfront setting, or the live music, Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival offers a welcoming, flavorful weekend that highlights Newport’s maritime heritage and local culinary scene.
