In June 2023 Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) handled 54,571 passengers in a single day, setting a new record for the airport and underscoring why SACBO, the airport’s managing company, continues to invest in facilities and services for passengers and airline partners.
“We have been working continuously to ensure the airport’s infrastructure development allows us to handle the ever-growing number of passengers we are experiencing, ensuring we can remain the leading choice for those travelling to and from the Lombardy region,” said Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation at SACBO. “The investment in our airport is allowing us to further develop and place ourselves as one of the leading gateways in Milan and northern Italy.”

Milan Bergamo is advancing several major projects to remain a modern and competitive airport. Expansion works include a new northern apron and taxiway, a terminal enlargement and construction of an on-site train station that will provide a direct rail link to Milan Central Station.
The new northern taxiway will increase operational capacity by about 35 percent, meeting projected traffic growth. The works also include three additional aircraft stands to support higher aircraft movements and reduce ground delays.
The first phase of the terminal expansion has begun and is scheduled for completion in early July 2024. This phase introduces a new check-in hall with 22 check-in desks and an extension of the baggage-handling system to better accommodate peak volumes and streamline passenger flows.

The second phase, planned to open in summer 2025, will expand the security screening, duty-free and boarding areas. The upgrade will include up to 14 C3-type security X-ray lanes with advanced technology, allowing passengers to keep liquids and laptops in hand luggage during screening. Two new non-Schengen gates and a duty-free area more than twice its current size will enhance the airport’s retail and service offering, improving the overall passenger experience. Milan Bergamo is one of three airports serving the Milan area, alongside Milan Malpensa (MXP) and Milan Linate (LIN).
After final approval for the new railway connection between downtown Milan and Milan Bergamo Airport, work has started on a tunnel linking the arrivals hall to the planned airport station. The rail station will feature four platforms, delivering a sustainable, efficient connection to the city center. Construction is expected to finish by the end of 2025, in time for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in the Lombardy region.

Beyond airport improvements, the nearby Lombardy cities of Bergamo and Brescia have set aside a centuries-old rivalry to become Italy’s first joint Capitals of Culture. The two cities will offer a varied program of cultural and culinary events. A newly established 80-mile trail, La via delle Sorelle (The Way of the Sisters), connects the cities and showcases the region’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. The trail can be completed in stages, with unique and comfortable accommodations available along the route for visitors.
