Contemporary Art Exhibitions in Vienna: What to See Now

Coming up at some of Vienna’s most compelling museums this spring and summer are several notable exhibitions. At 21er Haus, a contemporary art branch of the Belvedere, Oswald Oberhuber — A Retrospective runs through June 26 and presents works from the artist’s varied creative phases, spanning from the late 1940s to recent decades and illustrating his guiding idea of Permanent Change. The Albertina offers Anselm Kiefer: The Woodcuts, a presentation of thirty powerful woodcuts that examine Germany’s history, culture, and mythic imagery.

Through September 5, the Leopold Museum at Museumsplatz presents Berlinde de Bruyckere: Suture, a selection of works by the Belgian artist that probe themes of life, death, pain, and human vulnerability. Kunst Haus Wien hosts a Martin Parr retrospective from June 3 to November 2, featuring the British photographer’s distinctive studies of everyday life and the absurd, presented across a range of subjects and styles.

From June 24 to October 9 the Albertina will also feature a major display of 100 self-portraits by Jim Dine. Recognized alongside Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein as a central figure in American Pop Art, Dine’s self-portraits trace his artistic evolution and offer a personal counterpoint to the movement’s broader themes.

These exhibitions highlight Vienna’s dynamic cultural season, with offerings that span modern and contemporary art, photographic retrospectives, and sculptural explorations of the human condition.
