Arrival/Check-In: I arrived in Hawaii during one of the islands’ heaviest rainy seasons. Fortunately, the clouds parted and Honolulu was bright when I landed. The hotel valet joked about the large puddle in the driveway, and their playful warning to “watch out for the lake” set a relaxed tone. They even teased about unpacking my “long board” — a small moment of aloha that felt genuine.
I checked in and immediately soaked up the atmosphere of this Waikiki landmark. The front-desk staff informed me that local beaches were temporarily closed because of storms and offered a shuttle schedule to the North Shore. While unexpected, the alternative worked well — the North Shore is stunning and worth the trip. (18/20)
Guest Quarters: The hotel carries a lot of charm and history, though some areas show their age. Hallways, rooms, and bathrooms would benefit from updates, but the character of the property remains strong. My room featured a comfortable queen-sized four-poster Sheraton Signature Bed that made for a restful night. Some furnishings, like the desk and an overstuffed chair, felt worn and in need of replacement. The bathroom could use a full refresh, but bathroom amenities from Sheraton were high quality. Internet access was offered for a daily fee of $12.95 plus tax; personally I would prefer that included with the stay.
I met another business traveler at the iconic Mai Tai Bar, where the cocktail was first mixed. He admired the historic architecture and atmosphere and said he preferred this hotel to his more contemporary lodging. (10/15)
Services/Amenities: Service across the property was excellent. Housekeeping, valet parking, the business center, the Mai Tai Bar, and breakfast service all ran smoothly. At breakfast, staff quickly guided me past family groups to a table when I mentioned I had a 10:00 tee time at Turtle Bay — a small kindness that made a difference. The buffet offered a satisfying selection prepared to a high standard.
The Mai Tai Bar sits virtually on the sand, giving guests a front-row view of Waikiki Beach and the surf. Live music accompanies the setting, creating a lively, welcoming atmosphere. Travelers from around the world gather there, and the mood is warm and inclusive — a reminder that the island’s beauty and hospitality bring people together. (43/45)
The Experience: While a few areas feel a bit tired, the hotel’s beachfront location and deep connection to surfing history make it special. Its combination of heritage, service, and setting make it a memorable place to stay — a must for visitors who appreciate classic Hawaiian hospitality. (17/20)
