In 2018, U.S. travelers were expected to use their time away to pursue passions and meaningful experiences, according to a study by American Express Travel.
“For 2018, we see U.S. travelers expanding personal and global boundaries when they travel. We noted an increased interest in cultural discovery; personal connections; inspiring destinations; and premium, rejuvenating travel experiences,” said Tom Stein, vice president of American Express Travel.
More than half of respondents (57 percent) reported that their top travel goal for 2018 was visiting a destination they had never seen before. A similar share (52 percent) said they enjoy wandering and discovering new dining and shopping options. Nearly half (49 percent) described their ideal trip as “adventurous” and “exciting.”
Luxury and comfort were priorities for many travelers: close to 70 percent planned to fly first or business class in 2018, and 56 percent cited upscale air travel as a desirable perk. Roughly one quarter intended to use an airport lounge during the year.
The survey also found that who travelers go with matters more than the destination itself. More than half of those surveyed wanted opportunities to interact with locals, and an equal proportion expressed interest in staying with local hosts to deepen cultural connections.
Based on American Express Travel booking data, the top 10 destinations for 2018 were Bali, Costa Rica, Dubai, London, Portugal, Rome, Tel Aviv, “Utah-lorado,” Vietnam and Zurich. The term “Utah-lorado” refers to the mountain and resort region encompassing Park City, Salt Lake City, Aspen, Denver and Vail.
