Santa Luzia ArtHotel: Boutique Art-Inspired Stay in [City]

The rich history and art of Northern Portugal’s Minho Province are beautifully represented by the Santa Luzia ArtHotel, located in the historic town of Guimarães. Housed in a 19th-century mansion on a site with roots dating to the 9th century, the building was carefully restored and transformed into a luxury hotel by the architects at Gabinete Cerejeira Fontes. The project earned international recognition, winning the ArchDaily International Prize for Best Religious Building in 2011.

The hotel’s design blends modern and traditional elements, emphasizing local materials such as stone and wood. Interior designer Teresa Mendanha used a neutral color palette, forged-iron balconies and traditional embroidery to evoke the elegance of grand hotels from the 1920s and 1930s. Contemporary furnishings, paintings and curated artworks enrich the public areas and each of the 99 guestrooms, creating a refined yet comfortable atmosphere.

Guests can choose from a variety of room types, including 23 Prestige rooms and four Duplex suites, each thoughtfully appointed to balance historic character with modern conveniences. The dining room highlights Mediterranean cuisine, prepared with fresh regional ingredients, and the hotel provides complimentary WiFi throughout the property.

Facilities include a cozy library, a striking outdoor pool with a rooftop bar and an indoor pool. The spa and wellness complex offers a fitness center, massage and therapeutic treatments, a Jacuzzi, a Turkish bath and a relaxation area—ideal for unwinding after a day of sightseeing or meetings. For business travelers, the hotel also features meeting and event spaces with a private bar, accommodating corporate events and private gatherings.
