Ride the Historic Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Back in Time

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012, the narrow-gauge Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad traces its origins to 1880, when it was built to serve the silver mining communities of southwestern Colorado. After the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act in 1893 and the subsequent collapse of silver mining, much of the original railroad was dismantled. A cooperative preservation effort by the states of Colorado and New Mexico saved the most scenic stretch of track between Antonito, CO, and Chama, NM. Today the preserved route offers a four- to six-hour journey with knowledgeable docents on board, and visitors can view the coal-fired steam locomotives up close at the rail yards at either end of the line.

The Parlor Car has been restored to Victorian elegance and features panoramic windows and personal attendants who serve a fresh breakfast of fruit, pastries, coffee, juice and hot chocolate. Newly restored Deluxe Tourist cars and Open Air gondolas provide expansive views of the Rocky Mountain landscape as the train climbs high winding passes and follows deep canyons and rivers. The fall schedule begins on September 12 and includes several options: round trips between Antonito, CO, and Chama, NM (one way by train with a return by motor coach, or the reverse), and train service from Chama to Osier with a return trip by rail. The route includes a mid-journey lunch stop in the historic settlement of Osier.
