Toronto Cemented as a Premier MICE Destination for Events and Conferences

The diverse, welcoming and modern city of Toronto is emerging as a standout MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination, offering business travelers and event planners fresh, adaptable options. Global Traveler spoke with Jaques Lapierre, general manager of Bisha Hotel Toronto, to learn more about Toronto’s commitment to the expanding and evolving MICE market.

GT: What is the MICE market currently like in Toronto?

Jaques Lapierre: Toronto hosts major global events in a wide range of industries. The city transforms annually for the Toronto International Film Festival, one of the world’s premier film events. It also attracts large cultural, technology and life sciences conferences, as well as sporting events like the Honda Indy and community-focused gatherings such as Pride Toronto and Collision. Bisha sits at the center of these activities and we welcome MICE planners who want a central, dynamic base.

Beyond festivals and conferences, Toronto’s reputation for safety and stability is drawing more financial services events. The city is the second-largest financial services hub in North America and has one of the highest concentrations of financial headquarters in the Americas. As a result, business and technology conferences are increasingly choosing Toronto as their host city.

GT: How is Toronto setting itself apart from other destinations MICE planners might be considering?

JL: Toronto Pearson International Airport is one of North America’s busiest international airports, serving around 200 destinations across 55 countries, which means strong direct-flight connectivity from Europe, Asia, Mexico and the United States. That accessibility simplifies logistics for international attendees. The city is also recognized for its focus on public safety, digital and health security, and reliable infrastructure. Toronto operates North America’s third-largest public transit system after New York City and Mexico City, and offers a full range of transit options including commuter trains, taxis and rideshare services.

Venue variety is another advantage. Toronto offers large convention centers that can accommodate thousands, as well as boutique venues for more intimate gatherings. For planners seeking distinctive meeting spaces, Bisha’s Sky Suite provides an elevated experience: 43 stories above ground with floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping views of the CN Tower, Lake Ontario and the downtown skyline.

GT: What are some things you particularly want to promote to MICE planners in 2019?

JL: Toronto is an exceptionally diverse, multicultural city — more than half of its residents were born outside Canada and the community speaks roughly 200 languages. That diversity fosters a culturally rich atmosphere and makes international delegates feel at home. Personally, coming from Quebec, I appreciate the bilingual and multicultural nature of the city.

Toronto is also leading the trend of blending business and leisure. The city offers top-tier dining, renowned chefs, cultural institutions and memorable landmarks, allowing professionals to pair productive work with compelling leisure experiences. At Bisha, event organizers can combine a professional meeting or corporate event with luxury accommodations, premium dining and spectacular skyline views — all within one venue. That integration lets planners deliver a sophisticated, multi-dimensional experience that goes beyond a basic business stay.

GT: Are there any new or up-and-coming developments in Toronto that would interest MICE planners, such as new conference centers?

JL: Toronto’s construction sector has been a significant economic driver, and recent priorities include expansion in non-residential construction. This focus will introduce more venue options for MICE planners in the near future. Meanwhile, the current mix of established and boutique spaces already offers great flexibility for events of all sizes. Bisha, now approaching its first anniversary, continues to collaborate with planners to provide distinctive and luxurious settings for corporate meetings and events.
