Chiang Mai MICE Guide: Venues, Events, and Planning Tips

LOVELY CHIANG MAI is famous for its ornate temples, restorative spas, celebrated cuisine and lively night markets. Often called the “Rose of the North,” Chiang Mai invites visitors to unwind, explore rich cultural heritage and enjoy its scenic surroundings.

In recent years Chiang Mai has also emerged as a leading MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) destination. The city’s MICE profile has risen steadily: international association meetings, growing attendance figures and signature events have helped place Chiang Mai on the map for business events. Large-scale gatherings such as Chiang Mai Bloom and the Lanna Expo have attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors, demonstrating the city’s ability to host events at an international standard.

Since 2004, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has focused on promoting Thailand as a top MICE destination. Of Chiang Mai’s appeal for business events, Khun Chirut Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, president of TCEB, highlights the city’s distinctive Lanna culture and its attractive natural setting as major assets.

Under the initiative “Chiang Mai The Splendid City of Culture and Destination for MICE in Asia,” TCEB has pursued several strategies to expand MICE development in the region. Efforts include targeted marketing for Asian MICE markets, improving services and tourism products related to business events, developing human resources to support MICE activities and upgrading infrastructure to meet international standards.

To ensure delegates experience more than meeting rooms and exhibition halls, TCEB created a range of post-conference programs that showcase Chiang Mai’s cultural and natural attractions. Ecotourism options take visitors to places such as Mae Taeng Cooperative, Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park and On Tai Village, where guests can learn about local lifestyles and traditional crafts. Doi Pha Hom Pok offers scenic hiking trails and natural hot springs for those seeking outdoor activity and relaxation. Culinary routes introduce participants to northern Thai cuisine and traditional cooking methods. Handicraft-focused tours visit Baan Tawai for fine woodworking and Mueang Sat Luang Community for traditional lantern-making demonstrations. For team-building, venues such as the Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Centre, Huay Tung Tao Reservoir and Punpon Farm provide collaborative activities that encourage creativity and knowledge sharing.

A strong roster of professional venues reinforces Chiang Mai’s MICE credentials. The Chiang Mai International Exhibition and Convention Centre is one of Southeast Asia’s largest convention facilities, offering extensive exhibition and meeting space in a Lanna-style complex that supports international conventions, trade shows and fairs. Khum Kham International Convention Complex combines elegant Lanna design with modern technology and can accommodate large events from concerts to gala dinners and conferences.

Beyond these centers, many hotels provide versatile meeting spaces for events of various sizes. Lotus Hotel Pang Suan Kaew is recognized for its large convention facilities and central location, with expansive meeting areas that include a sizeable convention hall. Mercure Chiang Mai Hotel offers a range of meeting rooms suitable for medium-sized gatherings, while Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai Resort presents a unique heritage setting with extensive gardens and outdoor venues. Its pillarless ballroom, high ceilings and modern technical capabilities make it suitable for elegant evening functions as well as conferences.

With continued growth in international MICE visitors and ongoing development of capacity and services, Chiang Mai is well positioned for further success as a business events destination.

UNIQUE VENUES

Chiang Mai is also exploring neighborhood-based venues to broaden MICE offerings, support local economies and showcase community identity and resources. Cooperative communities such as Mae Taeng Cooperative Limited and Doi Saket Agricultural Cooperative Limited already welcome business groups interested in authentic local experiences.

For smaller, focused meetings, properties like Veranda High Resort Chiang Mai – MGallery by Sofitel provide a serene mountain retreat that blends with the natural landscape. Such venues are ideal for groups seeking a quiet setting where delegates can work productively while enjoying the region’s tranquility between sessions.
