According to a recent report from Hashtag the World, London was the most hashtagged city on Instagram in 2017.
Major cities worldwide saw substantial growth in the number of Instagram posts tagging them last year. London appeared in roughly 60,000 posts per day, overtaking New York City for the first time since the Amsterdam-based organization began tracking the world’s most popular hashtags in 2015.
New York finished a close second. Paris, Dubai and İstanbul took third, fourth and fifth places, respectively. Los Angeles and Tokyo recorded the highest growth rates, each increasing by roughly 50 percent over the previous year.
Part of this rise is due to Instagram’s expanding user base—about 700 million active users—making it one of the largest social networks globally, second only to Facebook.
“For the third edition of this exclusive report, we can clearly see that Instagram remains a dominant platform for sharing travel experiences and celebrating city life through hashtags. For the first time in three years, we were surprised to see London at the top of the ranking, pushing New York City into second place,” said Lucas Ribeiro, founder of Hashtag the World.
