It’s hard to imagine a mother-daughter getaway getting any better. We had lounged by one of Cancún’s largest pools—perhaps the biggest on the Riviera Maya—sharing secrets and wholehearted laughter. We sampled offerings from 17 themed bars and restaurants, from Mexican to Italian to Japanese; practiced yoga on a promontory over the sea; and toasted sunsets with margaritas. But when the call of pampering came, we spent the day in Mexico’s buzziest new spa: The SPA at AVA. There, our mother-daughter bond deepened further, creating the trip’s true highlight.
At AVA Resort Cancun, the city’s newest upscale all-inclusive, leaving the sun to go below ground felt almost wrong—until we descended into a sublime subterranean world of wellness. Marbled serpentine corridors lead to intimate nooks, treatment rooms, and fragrant, mosaic-lined relaxation spaces.
Stretching across an astonishing 66,000 square feet, The SPA at AVA unfolds with twists and turns through a variety of wellness zones, from saunas to crystal-infused hot spots designed for pre-treatment enjoyment. Despite its impressive scale, the spa never feels impersonal. The design evokes a warm, chic labyrinth of cozy sanctuaries that gently encourages relaxation and mindfulness. We soon set aside thoughts of tacos, guacamole, and mariachi bands in favor of a quieter, restorative world—at least for the day. Massages first, we decided, and later we’d return to more of the resort’s many amenities.

From the moment we arrived, the spa felt like a private sanctuary. We rarely encountered other guests, which gave the experience an intimate, first-class atmosphere. Attentive spa guides led us through a memorable pre-treatment ritual—a curated journey that sets this wellness center apart. Arriving early paid off: guided by a team of attendants, we moved from one wellness station to the next, following simple instructions—applying detoxifying mud, placing cool cucumber slices over our eyes, and alternating between ice-cold plunges and heated hydrotherapy pools. Saunas, steam rooms, warmed quartz crystal beds, and waterfall showers were among the many delights sprinkled throughout our pre-treatment exploration.
The spa menu is thoughtfully designed for guests seeking classic tropical-resort wellness. Massages and facials dominate the offerings, with plenty of variations, including treatments for couples. Options range from volcanic stone therapies and a signature detox massage to a soothing wrap for sunburn relief and firming facials. I chose an age-defying Recovery Facial, which lifted tension from my face and left me glowing. Combined with daughter time and the pre-treatment rituals, the results were transformative—we left looking refreshed and ready to decide which restaurant to visit for dinner.
Complementing the spa is an exceptional fitness center of more than 11,000 square feet staffed by energetic trainers. Multiple weight rooms and dedicated yoga and Pilates areas support a diverse schedule of daily classes—HIIT, breathwork, yoga, cardio, spin, and more. We worked out in the mornings and closed our days with sunset yoga on the terrace. One afternoon, as we rested in shavasana, a pod of dolphins danced in the surf below; it felt like nature’s encore to our practice.

Located amid mangrove jungle just minutes from Cancún International Airport, AVA Resort Cancun stretches roughly a mile along an idyllic beach. With 1,600 sea-view rooms and suites across two nine-story buildings connected by corridors, the resort is undeniably large—but it never feels overwhelming. Its size translates into choice and energy: adults-only pool areas and upscale restaurants create a romantic vibe for honeymooners, while family programs and children’s activities welcome families. Solo travelers and groups of friends will also find the resort accommodating.
