There are two ways to view Hong Kong’s economic success. One perspective reveals a breathtaking skyline — a dense forest of high-rise apartments and gleaming corporate towers. The other reduces that panorama to a hazy wash of indistinct shapes, blurred by pollution and distance.
As Hong Kong expands and nearby industrial centers in the Pearl River Delta continue to emit pollutants, air quality is affected. Smog obscures the city on roughly a third of the year. Authorities are taking steps to improve conditions, but visitors should be prepared for variability: clear views of the skyline often depend on timing and a bit of luck.
When the sky clears, head straight to Victoria Peak, the 1,811-foot volcanic rise that dominates Hong Kong Island. Reaching the viewing platform is part of the attraction. From Central District, the historic Peak Tram — a funicular in operation since 1888 — climbs the steep slope in about five minutes. The round-trip fare is around $5. At the summit, Sky Terrace 428 offers a 360-degree panorama of the island, with sweeping views across the harbor to Kowloon and beyond.
The fastest route between the island and the mainland is the Mass Transit Railway under the harbor, but on a clear day you won’t want to miss the view from the upper deck of the Star Ferry. The ten-minute crossing is a simple, scenic way to experience the city from the water.
On the Kowloon side, you’ll find famous shopping streets such as Nathan Road and the crowded, labyrinthine corridors of Chungking Mansions. When the bustle becomes overwhelming, take a break on the Avenue of the Stars, a pedestrian promenade along the waterfront. The avenue features handprints and statues honoring icons of Chinese cinema, including director John Woo and martial arts legend Bruce Lee.
The Avenue of the Stars also provides an ideal vantage point for A Symphony of Lights, the nightly free sound-and-light spectacle that illuminates the Hong Kong Island skyline at 8 p.m. If you prefer to watch in private, several nearby hotels offer rooms and suites with excellent harbor views — some even include private terrace jacuzzis — where the show can be enjoyed in comfort.
