Helsinki Airport has reached a new milestone, with annual passenger numbers climbing to a record 15 million. “Reaching the 15 million passenger mark is an important achievement for us. The positive growth in passenger volumes shows that our efforts to create a smooth travel experience, together with airlines and other partners, are working,” said Ville Haapasaari, Director of Helsinki Airport.
To accommodate this growth and prepare for future demand, the airport is launching a major development program this month aimed at increasing check-in and transfer capacity to 20 million passengers by 2020. Key elements of the program include the addition of a new security checkpoint in Terminal 2 and upgrades to dining and retail areas. The new checkpoint, planned for the terminal’s third floor and scheduled to open this summer, will increase throughput to more than 3,200 passengers per hour, reducing wait times and improving connections for transit travelers.
The renovation of dining and shopping venues will focus on enhancing passenger comfort and choice, offering a modern, customer-friendly environment for both departing and transferring passengers. Together with the expanded security capacity, these improvements are designed to streamline passenger flows, minimize congestion during peak hours, and support the airport’s role as an efficient Nordic hub.
Helsinki Airport’s growth reflects broader trends in travel demand and the airport’s strategic position for connections between Europe and Asia. The infrastructure investments are intended to sustain the airport’s competitiveness, improve service quality, and meet the expectations of both airlines and passengers as volumes continue to rise.
