I had heard of Dîner en Blanc before — the secret, all-white picnic where guests bring their own tables, chairs, linens, tableware and picnic fare to a surprise location. I had never attended until Philadelphia’s event on Aug. 16.
Traditionally, attendees supply everything except the venue and entertainment: tables are set, meals are enjoyed, and the crowd celebrates together in a striking sea of white. As a guest of the first Sofitel en Blanc partnership, my only responsibility was to dress in white and arrive ready to enjoy the evening.
We gathered at the Sofitel Philadelphia in Center City at 5:30 p.m. for a Champagne toast and a brief meet-and-greet. Everyone’s attention to detail — from crisp garments to thoughtfully styled table accents — was striking. Soon after, we boarded a white Philadelphia trolley that took us toward the secret destination.

As we approached Dilworth Park at City Hall, the scene became obvious: lines of white-clad guests winding around the block, all carrying picnic baskets, chairs and table settings into the square. We disembarked, located our assigned table and discovered crisp linen napkins, glassware and Sofitel dining menus already in place. Seating down, we relaxed and let the service take over.
The atmosphere felt like an elegant block party. Guests mingled between tables, shared photos, and danced as the night progressed. Dinner arrived in picnic-style boxes; plates and small bites were passed across floral arrangements and candelabras scattered along the table. Wine flowed, corks popped and live music added warmth to the evening. I enjoyed the revelry without dwelling on the inevitable teardown that would follow at the end of the night.
